This educational system originates from the old Javanese dormitories where religious philosophy was taught. <em>Pesantren<\/em> have played an important role for centuries and are based on values such as sincerity, simplicity, individual autonomy, solidarity, and self-discipline. Young men and women live separately from their families, which strengthens their religious commitment and their bond with their teachers. Most <em>pesantren<\/em> provide low-cost or free accommodation for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activities begin with morning prayer and end at night with study groups in the dormitory. During the day, students attend formal school like any other young person (science, sports, English, etc.).
