Pesantren or pondok pesantren are Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. This educational system originates from the old Javanese dormitories where religious philosophy was taught. Pesantren have played an important role for centuries and are based on values such as sincerity, simplicity, individual autonomy, solidarity, and self-discipline. Young men and women live separately from their families, which strengthens their religious commitment and their bond with their teachers. Most pesantren provide low-cost or free accommodation for students.
Activities begin with morning prayer and end at night with study groups in the dormitory. During the day, students attend formal school like any other young person (science, sports, English, etc.). In the afternoon and evening, they participate in religious studies. Pesantren may include traditional religious education, vocational skills training, and character development.
The main activities include formal and non-formal English conversation classes, interactive learning, educational activities, and developing a better understanding of Islam.
VOLUNTEER TASKS:
Carry out intercultural activities through games, music, presentations, and discussions; support local teachers in classes; organize activities together with teachers; share the volunteer’s culture through games, music, or dance; and motivate students to actively use English through non-formal and interactive activities.
